The Tail Still Bites: Travelers Books a $295m Asbestos Charge

Decades after the policies were written, asbestos still produced a nine-figure third-quarter charge at Travelers, more than offset by favourable reserve development elsewhere.

The Transaction

Travelers recorded a $295 million pretax asbestos charge in its Business Insurance segment in the third quarter, following its asbestos review.

Favourable prior-year development elsewhere more than offset it.

Business Insurance reported $336 million of favourable development excluding asbestos, Bond & Specialty added $95 million and Personal Insurance $98 million, giving net favourable prior-year reserve development of $234 million pretax.

Market Context

Asbestos has been a running thread in the Gazette, from Compre’s asbestos transactions to the Honeywell and Flowserve deals earlier this year. The claims trace back to policies written decades ago, yet they keep producing significant charges at each review cycle

JDC VIEW

Travelers could absorb this one comfortably, but the lesson for the market is clear: long-tail exposures don’t fade on schedule. That unpredictability is exactly why carriers pay legacy specialists to take these books off their hands, and why asbestos remains among the hardest liabilities to price.
